8 Simple Ways to Minimise Your Carbon Footprint
Because small lifestyle shifts can make a big difference.
When it comes to climate change, it’s easy to feel like the problem is too big for one person to make a real difference. But while individuals can’t solve it all alone, the choices we make still matter, especially when more of us start making them.
At Huel, our mission has always been to improve the health of people and the planet. Small changes in what we eat and how we live can contribute to a more sustainable future. It doesn’t have to feel like a huge commitment overnight; maybe start with one thing and go from there.
Addressing the climate crisis requires action at every level, from governments and businesses to communities and individuals. No single action is enough on its own, but together, they can drive meaningful change.
Here are 8 simple actions to lower your carbon footprint. Why not try one this month?
1. Eat a more plant-rich diet
Food is one of the most powerful ways to improve both our health and the environment.
Our global food system is responsible for 26% of global greenhouse gas emissions. Switching to a plant-rich diet and reducing your meat consumption is one of the most impactful ways to lower your environmental footprint. Small steps, this doesn’t mean you need to go fully vegan.
2. Reduce food waste
It's not just about the food we consume, but also the food we don’t. In the UK, around 9.5 million tonnes of food is thrown away each year, with about 70% of that coming from households and only 3% from the retail sector. In the US, around 133 billion pounds—or $161 billion worth—of food is wasted annually, according to the United States Department of Agriculture (USDA). That’s 30-40% of the national food supply, with most of the waste coming from households and consumer-facing businesses, and roughly 10% from the retail level.
Every bit of wasted food represents lost resources and unnecessary emissions, not to mention money down the drain. Take small steps like these to cut back, including planning your meals, and buy only what you know you'll use.
3. Fly less
Air travel has a big carbon cost. Choosing trains over planes, holidaying closer to home, or switching business meetings to video instead of in-person are all great ways to cut back. You don’t have to stop flying altogether, just find small ways to lessen your impact.
4. Switch to renewable energy at home
Switching to a 100% renewable electricity tariff is an effective way to cut down your carbon footprint. You won’t notice a difference when you flip the switch, but green energy tariffs support wind, solar, and other renewables, plus projects like tree planting to cut emissions. In the UK, you can compare green energy deals on MoneySavingExpert or Uswitch. In the US, tools like EnergySage, Choose Energy, or SaveOnEnergy can help you explore renewable energy options in your area.
5. Improve heating or cooling
Upgrading your homes insulation reduces heat loss in the winter and keeps cool air in during the summer, cutting energy use and lowering your carbon footprint. Try adding insulation to your loft, walls, and floors, and consider smart upgrades like heat pumps or thermostats. For even more savings, cut down on hot water use—maybe even shorten those showers!
6. Use eco-friendly transportation
Choose greener ways to get around to reduce your carbon footprint. Walk or cycle whenever possible. It’s not only great for the environment, but also for your health. For longer trips, try to take public transport like buses, trains or trams, and if you do need a car, consider carpooling. When it’s time for a new vehicle, look into more sustainable choices such as electric or hybrid options.
7. Install solar panels (if possible)
If you can, let the sun power your home. Solar panels capture sunlight and convert it into electricity, helping you run your home with clean, renewable energy. Whilst the upfront cost can be an investment, installing solar panels can reduce your reliance on fossil fuels, lower your energy bills, and support a more sustainable future.
8. Reduce and recycle thoughtfully
Make conscious, eco-friendly choices: look for minimal or recyclable packaging, choose refillable products, go paperless, and compost food scraps when possible. Just as important — sort your recycling properly to avoid contamination. For smart composting tips, check out the dos and don’ts here.
Small steps add up. Start where you can, and let your everyday choices be part of shaping a more sustainable future.
